Gianluigi Buffon speaks out in support of under-fire PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma

Former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon came out in support of Gianluigi Donnarumma (24) after a series of errors have led to intense scrutiny.

Donnarumma has been consistently at fault for several goals conceded in recent weeks with mistakes against AS Monaco and Newcastle United already creating pressure on Les Parisiens’ No.1, which has only grown after his reckless and bizarre kung fu kick earned him a red card against Le Havre.

It was a dangerous tackle that has renewed questions over how suitable the goalkeeper is to the way that Luis Enrique wants his PSG side to play

Buffon dismisses the criticism

Buffon suggested, in an interview, transcribed by L’Equipe, that these errors would not impact his fellow countryman, “I think Donarumma has grown a thick skin when it comes to criticism and constant self-doubt. I believe when you are considered one of the three best goalkeepers in the world, it becomes normal that every mistake gives rise to this kind of controversy.”

It would come as no surprise that Buffon would be protective of a player who was once referred to as his heir, especially when the former keeper understands better than most others the intense demands that come with being the goalkeeper for PSG.
