‘It’s a catastrophe for football’ – Marseille president Pablo Longoria condones the European Super League

Following the European Court of Justice’s latest ruling on FIFA and UEFA’s blocking of the European Super League, Marseille president Pablo Longoria has condoned the launch of any breakaway European competition. The European Court of Justice have ruled that the actions taken by the footballing bodies are not compliant with EU competition law.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday morning, the OM president said, “The decision does not at any time open the door to the Super League. I spent the whole morning analysing the sentence. There is one thing clear: the decision reminds everyone of the need for dialogue in European football. I consider that having three or four competitions organised by so many different organisers is a catastrophe for football. If this is the case, I see a difficult future for the world of football.”

Longoria is not the first president in France to disapprove of any breakaway competition, with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi being majorly against the proposition at its initial launch. The PSG president stated that the European Super League proposition was “motivated by personal interest”.

Longoria also felt the need to address rumours that Les Phocéens were interested in joining the ESL. The Spanish football president, said “I want to deny it, it’s completely false.”
