‘It’s a vicious circle’ – Nicolás Tagliafico critical of Lyon’s managerial turnover

Olympique Lyonnais full-back Nicolás Tagliafico (31) has criticised the club’s high managerial turnover. OL are already looking to appoint their third manager of the season, having sacked Laurent Blanc and Fabio Grosso.

Lyon are traversing a turbulent period. Despite rumours of a departure even before the start of the season, Blanc took charge of OL’s opening games, but amidst a toxic atmosphere, he soon departed, making way for Grosso. The Italian manager only lasted seven games in the dugout, making his reign the shortest in Lyon’s history.

Grosso has been replaced by Pierre Sage, who has been internally promoted on an interim basis. Although it has not been officially confirmed, the Frenchman is expected to remain in charge until the international break.

‘It’s the first time that I have had so many managers in such a short period of time’ – Tagliafico

Sage is perhaps in the running to remain in charge until the end of the season, although Bruno Genesio and Jorge Sampaoli are also linked with the vacancy.

All the uncertainty and chopping and changing is coming to the detriment of stability, and results, and Tagliafico has now criticised the approach. “It’s the first time that I have had so many managers in such a short period of time. It isn’t a good thing for the team. It’s a vicious circle: the team has bad results and we change manager, then things get better, then there is a relapse and we change manager. We need to change things,” said the World Champion in a press conference on Wednesday.

The manager who has arrived has come to help us and give everything until the end. It is also up to us to give everything and stay together. We are working with Pierre Sage as we have with the other managers,” added Tagliafico.
