What scenarios face PSG against Dortmund for European progression?

Paris Saint-Germain face a do-or-die trip to Dortmund this evening in the final match day of the Champions league group stage at the Signal Iduna Park. Its outcome will decide whether Luis Enrique’s side advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League, or realise the prospect of dropping into the Europa League.

After some poor results away from home in the Champions League against Milan and Newcastle, Les Parisiens have their fate in their own hands. A win against Dortmund would not only secure their qualification of the next round but see PSG secure top spot in Group F.

A draw, however, would force Parisian fans to keep an eye on Newcastle vs AC Milan at St James’ Park. A win or a draw for Milan would see PSG through, but a victory for the Magpies would spell elimination for les Parisiens.

In the event of a loss against Dortmund, PSG’s hopes rest on a draw between Milan and Newcastle – with a win for either the Italian or English side knocking out the French champions. In any scenario, PSG are guaranteed European football.

Possible scenarios for PSG:

To progress to the Round of 16, PSG must:

  • Secure a victory against Dortmund
  • Earn a draw while hoping Newcastle does not defeat AC Milan
  • Suffer a defeat but rely on a draw between Newcastle and AC Milan to keep their European journey alive.
