‘The team is progressing’ – Patrick Vieira pleased with Strasbourg’s mindset after Marseille draw

RC Strasbourg Alsace manager Patrick Vieira praised his team’s mindset after their 1-1 draw against Olympique de Marseille at the Meinau on Saturday night.

Strasbourg’s last victory in Ligue 1 came on 24th September, when they beat local rivals Metz in the Derby de l’Est, and whilst that run without a win is ongoing, Vieira was nonetheless pleased with his side’s performance, and believes they deserved more.

Les Alsaciens went ahead thanks to an early Emanuel Emegha goal, and whilst they were pegged back by a strike from academy product Jonathan Clauss, it was Strasbourg who created the better chances in the second half. Kevin Gameiro should have done better with his golden opening before Dilane Bakwa struck the crossbar with a curled effort.

However, neither side could find a winner and the two clubs’ winless streaks continued. Vieira was nonetheless happy with his side’s performance and stated that he sees progress.

I think we deserved better this evening. There was a lot of waste in terms of our decision-making and there is some frustration. There was an opportunity for us to win,” said the former Arsenal midfielder.

Strasbourg are now unbeaten since a 3-0 defeat to PSG on 21st October, and Vieira sees progress. “The team is progressing, as you have seen in the past three matches. We are more coherent. Some players are starting to get used to the level of Ligue 1 and the pressure at this level. I was pleased with the mindset,” said Strasbourg’s manager in a post-match press conference transcribed by L’Équipe
