Pierre Sage following defeat to Marseille: ‘When we solve one problem, another one appears’

Speaking to the press, Lyon coach Pierre Sage had the chance to comment on his team’s performance against Marseille, as once again Les Gones met defeat in a worrying fashion: “We understand why we are at the bottom of the league, while after the Lens game, we had doubts.”, as reported by L’ÉQUIPE.

Indeed, for Sage’s first game at the head of the team, OL had put up an encouraging performance against Les Sang et Ors, coming short of grabbing a point away at Stade Bollaert, with a brace from their Irish centre-back Jake O’Brien, ultimately losing 3-2. Collectively, it was the best performance from Lyon so far this season, and there were reasons to think that Sage was the man for the job.

However, it seems that against Marseille the team fell back in its tracks, notably in defence where Lyon had a tough time defending against OM’s wide players: “What really bothered us was their very wide positioning on their left side, our right side. We had trouble containing the inside and outside and tried to find a balance at the half time by transitioning to a 3-4-3, but there was more space in the middle. When we solve one problem, another one appears.”

OL will be looking for a positive result in their next Ligue 1 fixture, at home against Toulouse. In case of defeat, it might already be Sage’s last game as the team’s coach, having only joined as interim manager in the first place.
