Reims’ Will Still on Sunderland’s managerial shortlist, Julien Sablé among favourites for the job

The Guardian are reporting that Stade de Reims manager Will Still features on Sunderland’s shortlist to replace Tony Mowbray, who was sacked by the Championship club on Monday.

Building on the promise shown last season, Still’s Reims are currently fifth in Ligue 1. The Englishman orchestrated Les Stadistes’ 17-game unbeaten run last season, before ultimately guiding the club to a highly respectable 11th-place finish. He has taken the club from relegation candidates to European contenders, an achievement that has impressed Sunderland’s owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.

It remains to be seen whether Still would be open to taking such a job. Meanwhile, OGC Nice assistant Julien Sablé is also in contention for the job. The former AS Saint-Étienne interim manager is currently part of Francesco Farioli’s staff, and last season, he was also, technically, manager of some of Les Aiglons’ UEFA Europa Conference League fixtures. Sablé deputised for the licenseless Didier Digard, although the latter was still present on the sidelines and remained the man in charge, even if his name was not on the match sheet.
