Rennes: Julien Stéphan could deprive Benjamin Bourigeaud of captaincy

Benjamin Bourigeaud (29) inherited the armband at Stade Rennais following Hamari Traoré’s (31) departure to Real Sociedad, however, according to Mohamed Toubache-Ter and Sports Zonethe Frenchman could be stripped of the captaincy by new manager Julien Stéphan.

Stéphan returned to Rennes earlier this week, replacing Bruno Genesio, who won only two of the first 12 Ligue 1 games this season. His last game in charge came against Olympique Lyonnais, who earned their first victory of the current campaign against Les Rennais.

Bourigeaud was visibly emotional in the wake of that defeat. “Today [we feel] sadness. We’re showing character but we’re lacking something. We won’t give up,” he said.

Personally, Bourigeaud will be looking to return to top form, whilst the club are collectively looking to bounce back after an underwhelming start to the season. However, going forward, it may not be Bourigeaud who wears the captain’s armband. According to Toubache-Ter, the French forward is set to lose the armband, although this is not a sanction. Sports Zone have now confirmed that report, stating that new manager Stéphan is considering stripping Bourigeaud of the armband that he has worn for just a few months.
