Manchester United encourage bids for Raphaël Varane

The Guardian are reporting that Manchester United would invite offers for Raphaël Varane (30) in January. The club are looking to sell some key players in order to fund a rebuild.

The veteran centre-back is on high wages at Manchester United. According to The Guardian, he is on over £300,000 a week at Old Trafford, and his salary could make a move difficult, with few clubs able to replicate such a salary. RC Lens manager Franck Haise was asked about a potential return for Varane to the Stade Bollaert, and whilst he said that he would welcome the former France international with “open arms”, he admitted that wage demands would likely be a significant barrier.

“I read that it was difficult for Bayern Munich to pay his salary, so if it’s difficult for Bayern Munich… But maybe he wants to come back? I don’t know,” said the Lens manager in a press conference in November. Varane, came through the ranks at Les Sang et Or and played 24 times for the first team before moving to Real Madrid in 2010.

Regardless, Manchester United are encouraging bids for Varane this January, as well as bids for Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial. The latter’s contract expires at the end of the season, and a renewal is not forthcoming.
