Official | Angers dismiss Algerian left-back Ilyes Chetti following sexual assault conviction

Angers have announced the dismissal of Algerian left-back Ilyes Chetti (28) following the latter’s four-month suspended prison sentence for sexual assault. The defender had pleaded guilty over inappropriately touching a woman he did not know in an Angers nightclub on December 4. After receiving his suspended prison sentence in April, the former Espérance de Tunis left-back had been sidelined by Angers for a month.

Now, Ligue 2-bound Angers have decided to dismiss their player “given the facts reproached and acknowledged by the latter“. Chetti only played six Ligue 1 games with Les Scoïstes, with whom he was under contract until 2026. The Algerian’s transfer from Espérance de Tunis to Angers is at the center of a dispute between the two clubs. Chetti terminated his contract with the Tunisian outfit before putting pen to paper on a deal with the Anjou side. Espérance had contested the termination, and FIFA have ruled in their favour. Chetti was sentenced to pay €970,000 to his former club whilst Angers have been handed a transfer ban by FIFA over the next two windows. The club have taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
