Jean-Marc Furlan is in advanced talks with SCO Angers over their managerial position, according to a report from Le Courrier de l’Ouest.
The Anjou side will be relegated to Ligue 2 next season after producing one of the poorest seasons ever witnessed in the French top-flight a top-flight. Angers have lost 27 games out of a possible 35 and are on course to finish bottom. The French outlet reports that Furlan, who was also courted by Paris FC, have been in talks with Angers for several months now. The club’s hierarchy reportedly met him last week for “positive exchanges” and it is expected that the former Auxerre manager may soon put pen to paper.
However, his decision to commit to Angers may be dependent on the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s ruling on the nature of Angers’ transfer ban for the next two transfer windows. FIFA punished Angers due to a dispute with Espérance de Tunis over the free transfer of Ilyes Chetti last summer. The full-back, who was given a four-month suspended prison sentence for sexual assault, had terminated his contract with the Tunisian outfit before signing for the Ligue 1 side last summer.
Furlan is a free agent since his dismissal from the Auxerre dugout in October. The 65-year-old manager has a reputation for being an expert when it comes to bringing a Ligue 2 team back into Ligue 1 and he has done so five times already: with Troyes (2005, 2012, 2015), Brest (2019) and Auxerre (2022).
