Angers handed transfer ban by FIFA

For Ligue 1’s bottom boys Angers, a wretched, controversy-ridden season continues to plunge to new depths. The club has confirmed this afternoon that they have been handed a transfer ban by FIFA over the next two windows over a dispute with Espérance de Tunis over the free transfer of full-back Ilyes Chetti last summer.

Chetti, who was given a four-month prison sentence for sexual assault earlier this month, had terminated his contract with the Tunisian outfit before signing for the Ligue 1 side last July.

Espérance had contested the termination, and have now seen FIFA rule in their favour – with the left-back now made to pay €970,000 to his former club. He has also been suspended from football for four months – having already been sidelined by his club until May following his sexual assault conviction. Angers have indicated that they intend to appeal the decision through the Court of Arbitration for Sport. As pointed out by Ouest-France, the team will be desperate to avoid a ban this summer, given they have 16 players leaving at the end of their contracts, and a team to rebuild after relegation to Ligue 2.
