Angers on the brink of Ligue 2 relegation as early as Sunday

Angers’ wretched Ligue 1 season is coming to its inevitable end. Les Scoïstes fell at home against PSG on Friday night to become the second French top-flight club in history to lose 24 of their first 32 league games. Only Racing Club de Lens in 1989 had a season as poor as Angers’, according to Statsdufoot. 34 years ago, the Artois side ended the season with only 17 points, an all-time low.

The Anjou side are in Ligue 1 since 2016 and they look set to be relegated in Ligue 2 in the coming days. Their relegation may be official as early as tomorrow, depending on their rivals’ results. There’s only one scenario in which Angers won’t be officially relegated on Sunday. Auxerre would need to lose today against Lille, with Nantes and Brest not winning their respective Sunday games against relegation-battlers Troyes and Ajaccio. Angers have racked up a meagre 14 points this season, winning three games and drawing five, with a -43 goal difference.
