Former Angers president Saïd Chabane in police custody over alleged money laundering

Angers’ wretched season is reaching new depths. Former club president Saïd Chabane, who handed in his resignation last week, has been taken into police custody on Tuesday by the Nanterre judicial police. Chabane is suspected of organised money laundering, according to a report from TF1. Chabane – who remains the Angers owner – was summoned by the Central Department of Racing and Games.

Chabane is to be questionned from the police as part of an investigation opened by the Bobigny prosecutor’s office into the organised money laundering and unlicensed agents. Allegedly suspect financial transactions and the role of several players’ agents during transfers overseen by Angers are reportedly at the heart of investigations. Chabane’s lawyers have responded to LCI : “We have calmly submitted ourselves to this custody.” The Anjou football club’s headquarters was already searched twice in relation to these transfers.

It is not the first time that Chabane has been involved in judicial matters. The former Angers president was indicted in February 2020 for sexual assault. He will stand in June before the criminal court of Angers.

On the pitch, Angers SCO are bottom-placed in the Ligue 1 standings after losing 22 games out of a possible 29.
