It was another awful Ligue 1 gameweek for bottom-placed Angers, with the Anjou outfit humbled 5-0 against Montpellier on Sunday. Les Scoïstes have lost a staggering 20 league games this season so far, drawing four and winning only two.
Angers’ last Ligue 1 win was in September, such is the sorry predicament of the Abdel Bouhazama-led side. The coach has admitted that the foreseeable future of his club lies now in Ligue 2 in his damning assessment of his team’s loss. “Useless, useless, useless. And I’m involved in that, this is my responsability too. We got walked over and we made too many mistakes.”
With only ten points gained since the start of the season, Angers are deep in the 4-team strong relegation zone, and have a 12-point deficit on 16th-placed Strasbourg. “We can’t just give up, and I feel that some of my players were giving up”, Bouhazama said in his post-game press conference that L’Equipe attended. Against Montpellier, Angers were again the makers of their own demise with a goal conceded in the second minute and former Tottenham player Nabil Bentaleb (28) being sent off for back-to-back yellow cards when his team were 4-0 down. “We need to make hard choices and rely on players who want to fight until the end…”
But to what end, if the question is not whether Angers will be relegated, but when? “I believe it’s now hopeless”, Bouhazama said.
