Mathieu Le Scornet to remain Strasbourg head coach

Mathieu Le Scornet, formerly Julien Stéphan’s assistant and now interim manager, is set to remain as Strasbourg boss, according to a report from L’Equipe. RC Strasbourg president Marc Keller dismissed the former Rennes boss on January 9 following a poor run of results that saw the Alsatians fall to Ligue 1’s 19th place. The young coach arrived from Rennes at the start of last season and guided the club to an impressive 6th-place finish – narrowly missing out on European competition – and was expected to kick on this year having held on to the core of his squad and important players. However, a dramatic loss of form has now cost him his position with Le Scornet taking over as interim boss.

Le Scornet oversaw two Strasbourg games and passed with flying colours. He drew 2-2 at home against second-placed Lens and sealed a much-needed win away at struggling Lyon (2-1) with RCSA now 16th in the standings. The 39-year-old reportedly has the backing of his players who lobbied their president to give him the reins for a full-time job and, according to L’Equipe, Le Scornet is now the undisputed Strasbourg head coach. The Alsatians will host Toulouse next Sunday for Ligue 1 gameweek 20.
