Josh Maja to leave Bordeaux amid interest from Championship and Spanish teams

Having narrowly missed out on a return to Ligue 1 last season in controversial circumstances, Bordeaux will have been hoping to hold on to top scorer Josh Maja, as they prepare for another promotion push this upcoming campaign.

The Nigerian international has enjoyed a career-best return of 16 league goals, although the automatic renewal clause in his contract was not triggered by virtue of Les Girondins finishing outside of the promotion spots.

The 24-year-old’s contract has now expired, amid interest from Ligue 1 and abroad. L’Équipe indicate this afternoon that Maja has not responded to Bordeaux’s extension offer before the deadline, and will in all likelihood move on this summer. The club, who had offered a one-year deal with an automatic renewal in case of promotion, will now turn their attention to finding a replacement for the striker.

Maja has reportedly attracted interest from Championship sides, as well as from Spain – namely, Real Valladolid and Deportivo Alavés. Should he choose to stay in France, Reims and Brest are potential destinations.
