As his time in charge of Paris Saint-Germain comes to a premature end after just one season, Christophe Galtier nevertheless leaves the French capital as a Ligue 1 champion for the second time. A tumultuous season both on and off the pitch will have nevertheless cost him the job – particularly in the wake of another early European exit.
According to Le Parisien, talks are still ongoing between Galtier and PSG over the termination of his contract, although it appears he will receive €6m in compensation, which is less than what he would have been paid had he been kept on for the final season of his deal.
By way of comparison, Antoine Kombouaré had been dismissed in 2011 a year and a half before the end of his deal for €4m. Five years later, Laurent Blanc, who had just extended his contract, was compensated with €22m – although this figure goes down to €13m according to the club, in terms of the fee that Blanc actually received.
Galtier is set to be replaced by one of Julian Nagelsmann – with whom talks have already taken place – Luis Enrique, or Xabi Alonso, with the former Bayern Munich head coach seemingly emerging as the favourite for the time being, even if nothing is finalised for the time being.
As for the former Saint-Étienne coach, he has been linked with clubs in France and beyond – including a potential unexpected return to his hometown of Marseille.
