Samuel Yohou (30), a defender for Ligue 2 side Dunkirk, spoke to La Voix du Nord yesterday about the racist insults that he heard while playing at the Stade des Costières on the 5th February.
Having been booked against Nïmes, Yohou misses this weekend’s game against Nancy.
“It started with a lighter, they threw a lighter at Jérémy Huysman. The insults started from the left-hand side (opposite the bench). Before the end of the match, I heard ‘dirty black, get up you dirty piece of s**t,” explained the former Paris FC centre-back.
“You know, I’m 30 years old and I’ve got better things to be doing than listen to nonsense like that. After the end of the match, I was naturally happy with the victory. I looked at them. We know that every point is hard-earned so when we won at Nîmes after no-one backed us, I responded with rage. The assistant referee thought I was celebrating victory but a bit too vigourously. I explained to him that I had been insulted with racist comments. Ok, for the 90 minutes I managed to stay focussed but at the end, if I can say ‘s**t’ to them, I’m not gonna stop myself. The referees didn’t try to understand,” he said.
Having been interrogated by Midi Libre, the Nîmes management said that they “heard nothing of the sort” and that “no player on the pitch heard such insults, nor the assistant referee.”
The LFP commission for discipline has launched an investigation on the behaviour of Nîmes’ supporters and the verdict should be reached by next Wednesday.
