Kylian Mbappé’s PSG future not linked to Champions League progression

Paris Saint-Germain’s destiny is in their own hands as they head to Dortmund to try and secure progression to the UEFA Champions League group stages, however, a defeat could see Les Parisiens plunge out of the competition, should results elsewhere go against them. Regardless of the outcome of Wednesday’s match at the Signal Iduna Park, the result will have no bearing on the future of Kylian Mbappé (24), whose contract at the reigning Ligue 1 champions expires at the end of the season.

Mbappé’s future at PSG is still in the balance, however, one result will not tip the balance one way, or another, according to L’ÉquipeThe France captain’s contract expires at the end of the current season, and there are not yet any clear indications as to whether he will extend, or leave.

Would Champions League triumph secure Mbappé’s PSG departure?

Should he extend, he would do so for multiple seasons, not for just two years as he did in May 2022. That contract is already reaching its end, and Mbappé’s refusal to trigger an extension in the contract in June caused great tension between himself and the club. Mbappé was left off PSG’s pre-season tour, demoted to training with the “undesirables”, and left out of the squad to face FC Lorient on the first day of the Ligue 1 season, before being reintegrated.

However, whilst the option of a renewal is still on the table, a departure is also a possibility. Real Madrid’s interest in the AS Monaco academy product is long-standing and public. A Champions League elimination at the group stages may not have a bearing on Mbappé’s PSG future, but what about a Champions League triumph?

Mbappé has expressed a desire to “mark the history of the club”. Winning the Champions League would constitute just that. Whilst completing that objective may lead him to seek a challenge elsewhere, PSG are still a long way away from the Champions League final next Spring.
