Aymeric Laporte among options as PSG target defensive signing

Ahead of what’s shaping up to be another squad rebuild this summer, Paris Saint-Germain could find themselves focusing on recruiting for a position that previously looked to be covered.

Milan Škriniar’s imminent arrival on a free transfer from Inter is set to bring in some much-needed solidity in the Ligue 1 champions’ backline – but the uncertain contract situation of veteran defender Sergio Ramos and Presnel Kimpembe’s long-term injury lay-off have meant that the Slovakian international’s signing may not be enough. Christophe Galtier had indicated this week that talks were underway between the former Real Madrid man and the club, with the World Cup winner’s deal expiring in June.

L’Équipe report today that PSG are now in the market for a left-footed defender, with Manchester City’s Spanish international Aymeric Laporte and Bayern Munich’s Lucas Hernandez among the potential candidates. Sporting Advisor Luís Capmos has been floating the idea of sticking to the 3-5-2 formation the team has been using on an on-and-off basis under Galtier this campaign.

The potential loan departure of youngster El Chadaille Bitshiabu to Germany next season – although both Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt are favouring a permanent transfer – could only emphasise the short-staffed nature of PSG’s defence.
