Raphaël Varane could leave Manchester United as free agent at end of season

According to The AthleticRaphaël Varane (30) could leave Manchester United as a free agent at the end of the season. The former France international is allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club from January.

As reported by The GuardianVarane could leave Manchester United. The Premier League side are looking to fund a rebuild of their squad and view the Frenchman as a saleable asset. They are therefore encouraging offers for the centre-back. His contract, according to the club, runs until 2025, but as revealed by The Athletic, Varane’s deal in fact expires at the end of the current campaign.

However, Manchester United have the option to extend Varane’s deal by a further year (until 2025), which would mean the club forking out another £13m to pay the former Real Madrid defender’s salary. Alternatively, Varane could leave at the end of the season on a free transfer, with the player free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with non-British clubs from January.

Varane to Bayern Munich? Or Lens?

Whilst Manchester United often trigger the one-year extension included in player contracts, they are not set to do so with Anthony Martial, as revealed by The Athletic. It is unclear whether they will do so with Varane.

Varane has been linked with a move to Bundesliga side Bayern Munich by Sky Sports. Franck Haise, manager of RC Lens, Varane’s former club, has said that he would welcome the former France international “with open arms” but admitted that a deal may be financially difficult, given Varane’s current wages at Manchester United.
