OGC Nice’s Sofiane Diop opts to play for Morocco and receives first call-up

As reported by Foot Mercato, OGC Nice forward Sofiane Diop (23) has opted to play for Morocco over France and Senegal. He has been included in Walid Regragui’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Tanzania.

Diop, who came through the ranks at Stade Rennais before making a move to AS Monaco back in the summer of 2018, has represented France at youth level, notably featuring for the U21 side on 11 occasions, scoring four goals. However, the Nice forward has never received a call-up for Les Bleus, and he has now committed his international future to the Atlas Lions.

Foot Mercato broke news of Diop’s decision on Thursday, just before Regragui’s squad announcement. The Aiglon forward has indeed been included in Regragui’s squad. Another former France U21 forward, Amine Adli (23), made the same decision earlier this season. The Bayer Leverkusen winger has also been included in Morocco’s squad for the upcoming international break.
