Nice draw Basel in Europa Conference League quarter-finals

OGC Nice have drawn Swiss side FC Basel in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League, after knocking out Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday evening.

Nice made history against the Moldovan side at the Allianz Riviera. Didier Digard’s side defended their first-leg advantage, eventually overcoming their opponents 4-1 on aggregate. It is the first time that Les Aiglons have reached the quarter-final of a European competition since 1960.

Le Gym’s progression was good news for the club, but also for France, who are in a UEFA coefficient battle with the Dutch top flight to retain their fifth place, which from 2024 will earn Ligue 1 an extra Champions League spot.

Nice’s draw is favourable. They avoided AZ Alkmaar and West Ham United, drawing Basel, who are currently sixth in the Swiss top flight. The quarter-final first leg will take place on the 13th of April with the return leg at the Allianz Riviera on the 20th of April.
