France international centre-back Axel Disasi (25) has given a wide-ranging interview with Goal, during which he linked his AS Monaco future to Champions League qualification.
Disasi has been called up by Les Bleus’ boss Didier Deschamps for the current international break as a replacement for the injured William Saliba (22). Disasi was part of France’s squad that went on to play in the 2022 World Cup final. He even played against Argentina when he replaced Jules Koundé, who sustained an injury deep in extra time. A versatile defender, able to play centre-back or as a right-back, Disasi has hinted he needs to regularly play the Champions League if he is to consistently make the France squad.
With France packed with skilful young centre-backs, such as Wesley Fofana (22), Jean-Clair Todibo (23), Saliba and starters Dayot Upamecano (24) and Ibrahima Konaté (23), Disasi knows the competition will be fierce, and only those competing at the very highest level will get the nod. “Thanks to Monaco, I became an international player. So I’m grateful to the club”, Disasi said. “Then, I’ll need to consider my future. To be called up by France, you need to play in the Champions League.“
However, Disasi recalled that his ambitions to play Europe’s showpiece club competition match those of Monaco, who sit fourth in Ligue 1. Nevertheless, it appears unlikely that the former Reims man will stay put this summer with Les Monégasques. Last week, Foot Mercato reported that Manchester United have recently met with the entourage of Disasi to discuss a potential summer move. “I feel like I’m reaching new heights. I just turned 25 and I want to experience the highest level. We’ll see what happens at the end of the season and, depending on the club’s performance, I’ll consider my options.“
