Game of the week: RC Strasbourg Alsace v Olympique Lyonnais, Sunday 19:45 (UK)

Ligue 1 returns with a thrilling tie on Friday night. Nice have a new man at the helm in Francesco Farioli, and he will be hoping to get off to a winning start. However, he comes up against a Lille side that have retained their key assets – so far – making this a tricky tie for the inexperienced Italian. PSG’s preparation for their opener against Lorient has been sub-optimal to say the least, but a victory at the Parc des Princes would certainly lift the mood around the place.

Marseille’s loss against Panathinaikos in midweek means that Marcelino’s reign got underway on a bad foot. Things don’t get too much easier for the Spanish manager, who comes up against a Reims side that were something of a surprise package last season. The Champagne club’s investment in the summer transfer window will make them even more competitive, and they may be aiming to disrupt the not-so-established order at the top of the table. The gameweek closes with Strasbourg v Lyon: two clubs that seem to be heading in different directions. Patrick Vieira has to prove that he embodies the ambition of this rejuvenated Strasbourg side, whilst a loss for Lyon could put Laurent Blanc under some early pressure.

PSG 3-1 Lorient
