PLAYER RATINGS | TOULOUSE 1-1 PSG – Kylian Mbappé scores on return, but TFC earn late draw

Kylian Mbappé was on hand to score from the spot on his return to Luis Enrique’s PSG side, who were looking to see out a 1-0 lead until a foul from Achraf Hakimi gave Toulouse the opportunity to equalise late on. Morroccan Zakaria Aboukhlal stepped up to level up for TFC from the game’s second penalty on the 86th minute.

Luis Enrique’s side started the first half very much where they left off against Lorient, seeing much of the ball but only creating a handful of chances. Toulouse, on the other hand, looked well set-up to soak up the pressure with a 3-4-3 which dropped into a back five when PSG where on the attack. This was a pattern of play that saw PSG retain much of the ball, with Gonçalo Ramos having several opportunities to get on the scoresheet on very little service.

Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé were constantly filmed on Canal+ cameras waiting impatiently on the bench to enter the field of play – as if the solution to PSG’s toothless attack was glaring right in front of Enrique’s eyes. The pair warmed up to much acclaim in front of the travelling PSG supporters, but it wasn’t until ten minutes into the second half that Enrique decided to bring the attacking pair on.

From here on in it was a different game for PSG, and a completely different beast for Les Violets to deal with. Dembélé was dangerous down the right side, as Mbappé began with his pace and direct runs on the left. It was indeed the France captain that made the difference – after being played in behind he approached the box with attacking intent. His iconic step-over beat Desler once, and on the second attempt the Dane couldn’t help but bring Mbappé down. After a lenghty VAR check the referee spotted the contact and gave the spot-kick. Of course, it was none other than Mbappé to step up and dispatch the penalty with ease to put Les Parisiens ahead.

PSG were looking good to see out the game, and had dominated proceedings since the double switch. Yet, in one moment, a lapse of concentration from Achraf Hakimi saw him foul his fellow countryman Zakaria Aboukhlal – who stepped up confidently to dispatch the equalising penalty late on.
