Fabio Grosso admits Lyon in a relegtion battle

Fabio Grosso has admitted that Olympique Lyonnais cannot challenge for the top spots in Ligue 1 this season and that the club are instead competing to remain in the French top flight.

Lyon are yet to win all season. Their record of three draws and five losses in their opening eight matches leaves them 17th, just one point above rock-bottom Clermont Foot, and four points away from FC Lorient, who currently occupy the relegation play-off spot.

Les Merlus were Lyon’s opponent on Sunday. Grosso’s side let a two-goal lead slip in the second half, as Lyon missed a golden opportunity to close the gap. Speaking post-match, Grosso, who took over from Laurent Blanc earlier this season, didn’t strike an optimistic tone.

For now, we can’t compete for the top places so of course, we can only fight to stay up,” said Gross in a press conference, transcribed by L’ÉquipeLyon face bottom side Clermont Foot upon the return from the international break before facing rivals Olympique de Marseille in the Choc des Olympiques.
