Olympique Lyonnais fans have been banned from attending the rearranged match against Olympique de Marseille, scheduled to take place at the Vélodrome on Wednesday night.
The match was initially scheduled to take place at the Vélodrome on Sunday 29th October, however, after Marseille fans’ attack on Lyon’s team bus, which left now-former manager Fabio Grosso with a facial injury that required stitches, the game was abandoned just before the scheduled kick-off.
A ‘real and serious risk of confrontations’
The match was rearranged to take place at the Vélodrome with Marseille fans, despite Lyon’s vocal and public protestations. Whilst OM fans will fill the Vélodrome, OL fans will not. On Tuesday, France’s Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, confirmed that away fans will be prohibited from attending the match.
The ban has been justified by the “real and serious risk of confrontations between the supporters of the two clubs.” The statement also referenced the misbehaviour of Lyon fans, who were seen making nazi salutes and directing homophobic and racists chants towards the home supporters. The incidents that took place in Marseille on 29th October are currently being investigated by the Marseille Public Prosecutor.
