Warren Zaïre-Emery beats Karim Benzema’s record to become youngest Frenchman to score in Champions League

Warren-Zaïre-Emery (17) became the youngest Frenchman to score in the UEFA Champions League, beating the previous record, set by Karim Benzema (35).

Zaïre-Emery’s goal was not only record-breaking, it was also crucial. His equaliser ultimately secured Paris Saint-Germain’s progression to the group stages. At the time of his goal, PSG were trailing Borussia Dortmund, and with AC Milan ultimately beating Newcastle United (2-1), Les Parisiens needed a point to progress from the group stage.

At the age of 17 years and 280 days, Zaïre-Emery becomes the youngest Frenchman to ever score in the Champions League. That record previously belonged to Benzema, who scored for Olympique Lyonnais at the age of 17 years and 352 days. Kylian Mbappé (24), the third youngest Frenchman to score in the competition, registered his first goal for AS Monaco at the age of 18 years and 63 days.

It is thanks to Zaïre-Emery, who is also PSG’s youngest goalscorer in an official competition (16 years and 330 days) and the second youngest scorer for the France national team (17 years and 255 days), that PSG still have a chance of winning that much-coveted Champions League trophy.
