Amiens SC have collected over 5,800 signatures for a worldwide petition launched in an article on their website earlier today that calls for the LFP to reverse their decision to relegate the club following the definitive termination of the 2019/20 season which occurred last week owing to COVID-19.
This, despite the fact that they were still 10 matches left to complete the campaign.
Over the weekend, it emerged that Amiens SC President Bernard Joannin would partner with the Mayor of Amiens in their legal crusade to reverse this decision.
This petition therefore appears to be part of a multi-pronged strategy to put pressure on French football’s governing bodies:
“In the face of this grave decision with consequences that go against sporting fairness, Amiens SC asks the LFP to reconsider its position and make a fairer decision: a Ligue 1 with 22 clubs next season. We are also asking for the help of all the Amiens supporters, and all those who love football, to support this initiative which will make the world of football and sport grow.”
In the article, the Picardy club also explicitly called on Ligue 1 presidents to join them in their fight. Amiens sat 19th in the standings after 28 games played, 4 points off Nîmes, who owing to the LFP ruling have conversely not been relegated, despite the fact that under normal circumstances they would have had to face a relegation play-off clash.
