Bordeaux president Gérard Lopez to request postponement of Ligue 2 fixture

Following the announcement that French giants Bordeaux will in fact be permitted to play in Ligue 2 this season, avoiding a second relegation on financial grounds, the club’s president Gérard Lopez spoke to France Info about the decision and the impact on the Girondins. He mentioned that the lateness of the decision, which came just days before the first scheduled fixture, against Valenciennes on Saturday, is problematic. He has therefore suggested postponing the game.

“We’re not sure [we’ll be able to play] since we know Valenciennes will have also been waiting to know the result. I think both clubs will ask for a postponement. We’ll see what the competition decides.”

Via their official Twitter account, however, Valenciennes have denied requesting a postponement, writing “VAFC had foreseen all possible eventualities in regards to the survival of the Girondins de Bordeaux, including going to play at the Matmut Atlantique stadium this Saturday at 7pm.”

As things stand, the game is still scheduled to go ahead at the pre-arranged date and time.
